Galveston Island Activities

Galveston Island is such a vibrant place with so many things to do, it would be difficult to get all of the activities in during even a prolonged visit. Miles of beaches, theaters, shops, tours, museums, entertainment centers, and local concerts, events, and parties keep visitors busy. Sailboarding, surfing, fishing, birding, biking, parasailing, and horseback riding are all available.


Mardi Gras
Galveston's yearly carnival, the largest in Texas, with over half a million party visitors each year.

Boat Tours
Boat tours of the harbor are available.

Air Tours
Air tours of the island are also available. Includes the beach, the ship channel, Bolivar peninsula and various other attractions.

Galveston Island Duck Tours
An unusual vehicle which travels on land and water. Tour lasts 1 1/2 hours and covers The Strand, Offats Bayou, and the Historic District.

Bus Tours
A two-hour live narrated citywide tour featuring information on history, museums, and attractions.

Treasure Isle Tour Train
A 1 1/2 hour tour of the island covering various attractions and several unique sights.

Beaches
Galveston enjoys miles of public beach area. Activities range from ultra-extreme sports to simply enjoying the gulf breeze while sunbathing.

Surfing
Several shops along Galveston beaches offer surfing equipment and lessons. Surfers from around the globe have surfed at the island.

Dolphin Watching
Dolphins are frequently seen in the area.

Fishing
Every day those who love to fish are found fishing along the beaches of Galveston Island. Men, women, and children gather on the beaches themselves, on the piers, and out in boats to fish. Several choice sites are set up especially for rows of people to fish. Schools of fish can often be seen in the waters. Galveston Island Fishing
includes tackle shops, chartered trips, jetty fishing, and more are available on the island. Shark fishing can be enjoyed year round. Various other fishing is available throughout the year.

Golf
The Galveston Island Municipal Golf Course and the Galveston Island Country Club each offer 18-hole course golf. The municipal course is ranked among the Top Five Municipal Golf Courses according to the U.S. News & World Report. It is the location of the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Tournament and the H & R Invitational Tournament. It is open daily. The country club includes a driving range, a putting green, and a complete pro shop. The club has a resident pro, Bruce Rodysill. The club also offers a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a restaurant. It is open to guests at some local hotels and members of other selected clubs.

Historical Medical Tour of Galveston
Tours of the world renown university medical facilities of the island, many housed in historic buildings. The medical field is the largest employer of the island.

Annual Historic Homes Tour
Held every year during the first two weekends in May.

Galveston Historic Homes Tours Champagne Tours
Part of the Annual Tours. These special evening tours include hors d’oeuvres, champagne, and live music.

"Dickens on the Strand"
Named one of the 100 best events in North America by tourism professionals and one of the Top 10 events in the state by Texas Highways Magazine. It also is among the Top 100 events in the world according to travel writer Allen Davis who included the event in his publication, "The Fun Also Rises Travel Guide to North America: The Most Fun Places to Be At The Right Time".

Parade of festively decorated boats.

Music and Arts Festival
Held each October featuring local and national performers and artists.

Downtown "Walk-About"
A benefit for Clean Galveston. A treasure hunt sending participants to 25 participating merchants for the chance to win prizes.

Oktoberfest
Hosted by First Lutheran Church. A Fall celebration featuring authentic German bands, German foods, and crafts.

The Trolley Run
Annual competition for all levels of runners.

GHF Historic Homes Tour
Eight privately owned homes are opened to the public for this unique event.

Luxury Cruises
Carnival Cruise Lines, the most popular
cruise line in the world, offers 4 and 5 day
cruises out of Galveston. "Celebration" or "Jubilee" will treat you to your "Fun From Texas" trip. Destinations include Calica/Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Cruises include many onboard activities and much fine food and entertainment.

Royal Caribbian offers 7 day vacations aboard the "Rhapsody of the Seas". Destinations include Key West, Florida, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. Day trips include stops in George Town to enjoy snorkeling, beautiful beaches, and tours of Mayan ruins.

Rentals
ATV, buggy, scooter (electric and manual), and bicycle
(electric and manual) rentals are available. Jet ski, Banana boat, and other rentals available.

Activity Tours
Guided ATV trail rides and Marsh/Swamp and Waterway/Canal tours on swamp-modified jet skis exploring the natural terrain with fun and educational information included are available for all ages year round. Each includes transportation from and to Galveston hotels and a Bolivar Ferry ride.

Volleyball
Gulf Coast Volleyball Association GCVA events attract players of all ages from all over.

Annual Yaga's Children's Fund Wild Game and Barbecue Cookoff
A benefit for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Gulf Coast.

Steel Oleander Award Luncheon
A May event to honor those who have contributed to preserving the area's precious wildlife.

Discovery Day Camp
A one week camp for ages 8-10.
